ABR – HOW TO START

We really value your time and try to make your ABR experience really worth it from the very first contact.

ABR is not for everyone and requires a serious commitment and we really want to help you to make a well-informed decision on whether ABR is appropriate for you and your child.

Through experience we have found that the following sequence of steps works the best.

1. Ordering the extended ABR information package.

Delivered  through the mail and includes the DVD “ABR Facts” that illustrates the examples of progress achieved by a variety of children as a result of the ABR hands-on work done by their parents at home.
Besides of that we recommend to sign up for the regular updates of the comparison video files posted on this website illustrating the specifics of progress of different children who follow ABR program.
Of course, individual results vary because all children and parents are different but these videos will provide you with a valuable reference on whether the ABR might work for your child.

  1. Signing up for the preliminary ABR pre-assessment of your child.

That will help you to understand how the ideas and tools of ABR Method apply to the INDIVIDUAL case of your child.
It’s simple – you send us the video of your child’s mobility and weight-bearing tests filmed at home according to the ABR Home Testing and Filming Protocol.
This protocol is rather self-explanatory – hundreds of parents send us the home videos routinely.

This is usually done in the following steps:

    1)    Read through the examples of ABR assessments posted on this website (on www.blyum.com) to have a better idea of the information they reveal and the format.
    2)    Study the extended ABR information package that you have received through the mail
    3)    Inform us about your decision to sign-up for the ABR preliminary assessment (evaluation) via e-mail or through the phone.
    4)    We send you the ABR Home Testing and Filming Protocol via e-mail as well as some tips on filming at home that had proven useful for the other parents.
    5)    We advise you to make the best use of this home video by asking us any specific questions about ABR that you still have after reading and watching through the extended ABR info package and this website. This video is a also being the best way to share the particular concerns about your child’s condition, especially movement and behavior, since “a picture is worth a thousand words”.
    6)    Once we receive your video we will let you know how long it would takes us to prepare a report. We strive to do it as soon as possible realizing the value of your time and anxiety but it’s a lot of work and depending on the workload that might take 2-4 weeks.
    7)    Report is going to be delivered to you as a MS Word file with picture inserts or as a screen recording video.

  2. Studying your ABR Report.

Your report addresses a number of fundamentals essential for your informed decision-making:

    •    Pointing out the specifics of compressional weaknesses and “Wrong place/wrong movement” structural challenges that your child experiences
    •    Indicating the difficulties these structural issues create for specific weight-bearing and movement challenges your child experiences
    •    Analyzing the ‘quality’ of the early developmental stages for your child – e.g. Whether the head control phases are really complete; what exact mechanisms of sitting compensations does your child use etc.
    •     Outlining the likely scenarios of weight-bearing and movement progress for your child if these challenges are addressed with ABR tools

Of course, the extent of those structural challenges and their exact contribution to the limitations of weight-bearing, posture and mobility might vary but these are the fundamentals that make negative contribution to any case of movement difficulties.
We do encourage you to study it attentively. Whether you decide to follow ABR further or not, anyway that’s valuable additional information about your child that you are unlikely to find elsewhere.

  3. Making a decision on duration of ABR trial period.

There are no universal recipes when it comes to the individual program of Developmental Enhancement for a special needs child, especially in the cases of brain injury.
We believe in due diligence and informed decisions made by parents.
That means you need to give a solid trial period to any new method, ABR included, before deciding on whether this new ‘therapy’ deserves a long-term inclusion in the your home program of Developmental Enhancement for your special needs child.
ABR effect relies on the long-term remodeling of fascia and reliable evaluation of ABR results for an individual case f your child would require an investment of several hundred of your hands-on  working hours.

Therefore, before enrolling to ABR program you need to make a firm commitment of following it for at least 1 year, being ready  to experience both the “sunny” and the “rainy” days.

If you do not feel that the general ABR information and the individual report provide enough encouragement for such a firm 1 year commitment we are fine about that.
Anyway we’d encourage you to stay in touch with us and to follow the ABR websites and developments regularly. Whether you are doing ABR or not still we do share a lot of information, including proven strategies and tips that are valuable for any parent of a child with special needs.
In 1 year –take a next evaluation to compare the progress made by your child.
